Embedded SW Developer
Job Description
Hyperscale Power is building the power backbone for the AI data center era: a complete power conversion chain from 13.8kV–35kV medium-voltage AC down to 800V DC, combining ultra-compact SiC-based AC/DC and DC/DC power blocks. The embedded firmware is what turns our power electronics hardware into a safe, controllable, and connected system – running the real-time control loops, protection logic, and monitoring that our customers and certification partners depend on.
As Embedded SW Developer, you will design, implement and test the firmware running on our power conversion systems – from prototype bring-up through qualification and volume production. You will work closely with the Power Electronics, Grid Systems and Test & Field teams to bring our AC/DC and DC/DC power blocks to life.
It is a unique opportunity to shape the firmware architecture of a breakthrough power electronics platform from an early stage – with direct visibility to the CTO and engineering leadership.
Key Responsibilities
• Design, develop and test embedded firmware for real-time control of our AC/DC and DC/DC power conversion stages, including control loops, PWM generation and feedback control.
• Implement protection functions, fault detection and safe shutdown / fault ride-through behavior in close collaboration with the Power Electronics and Grid Systems engineers.
• Develop communication interfaces and protocols for monitoring, telemetry, remote control and integration with customer/data center systems (e.g. Modbus, CAN, Ethernet/IP).
• Implement security-by-design principles across the firmware lifecycle, including developing secure boot processes, hardening communication interfaces against unauthorized access, and implementing authenticated, encrypted protocols (e.g., Modbus/TCP Security, TLS) for all remote telemetry and control functions.
• Support hardware-software integration and bring-up of prototype and pilot units; debug using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers and JTAG/debug tools.
• Define and maintain firmware architecture, coding standards and documentation – using verified building blocks and libraries where possible rather than reinventing from scratch.
• Support test automation and continuous integration as well as the development of these processes for firmware validation and regression testing.
• Collaborate with the Test & Field and Quality teams on qualification testing (stability, endurance, load tests) and support certification processes with our external test & certification partners.
• Support field diagnostics and firmware updates for units deployed at Alpha customer sites and help scale firmware architecture and processes as we move toward volume production.
Qualifications
• BSc / MSc in electrical engineering, computer engineering, embedded systems or comparable education.
• 3+ years of experience developing embedded production-grade firmware, ideally for power electronics, motor control, or other real-time control systems.
• Strong C / C++ programming skills; experience with microcontrollers or DSPs (e.g. TI C2000, STM32, or similar) and their development tools/platforms (e.g., Code Composer Studio, Vitis, STM32CubeIDE, etc.).
• Understanding control theory and real-time data acquisition, protection functions, and control loops (PWM, current/voltage control) is a plus.
• Experience with communication protocols such as RS232, RS485, SPI, I2C, CAN, Modbus, or Ethernet/IP.
• Practical experience with embedded security implementation, such as managing hardware roots of trust (HSM/Secure Elements), secure firmware-over-the-air (FOTA) update mechanisms, and familiarity with industrial cybersecurity standards like IEC 62443 or EU NIS2.
• Familiarity with hardware debugging tools (oscilloscope, JTAG, logic analyzer).
• Experience with version control, test automation and CI/CD for embedded systems; familiarity with related software platforms (e.g., GitLab, Docker, Jenkins, etc.) and AI coding agents.
• Team player, comfortable working directly with hardware teams in a fast-paced startup environment.
• Language skills: fluent in English, spoken and written; German language skills helpful, but not mandatory.
• The job will be located at our HQ in Egg b. Zürich, Switzerland.
Benefits
• Equity + competitive salary.
• Unique technology and market opportunity – validated prototype and first paying customers on the path to volume shipments.
• Hybrid work with flexible working times.
